Do you consider yourself a writer — even though you haven’t written anything you’re really proud of (minus the occasional wedding speech) for years? Is your childhood bedroom full of dogeared journals bursting with beautiful stories you scribbled way back when imagination was your religion? Do you have the “cool” NYC job you’ve always dreamed of but find yourself, hungover, cracked out on cold brew + creatively depleted at your cubicle all day? Is mindless Instagram scrolling the closest you come to feeling artistically inspired? This Fall I’m offering two 6-week Narrative Nonfiction workshops (Wednesdays, 7-9:30 PM: Sep. 11, 18, 25, Oct. 2, 9, 16; Thursdays, 7-9:30 PM: Sep 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3, 11, 17), for storytellers too scared to call themselves writers who finally feel ready to reboot their practice. Through memory prompts, long-form essays and workshops, you’ll explore technique (when + how to use dialogue, heartbreak + humor through time shifts, crafting scenes, creating worlds through repetition + imagery, etc) while simultaneously doing rigorous + radical deep diving into the recesses of your psyche. Our syllabus covers Toni Morrison, Jill Lepore, Jessmyn Ward, Ocean Vuong and more… lots of good literary + spiritual nourishment to stimulate your synapses and keep your left brain firing on all fronts. The goal is to transform all those dark/weird/wild/shame/lust/love + secret filled scenes from your past into delicious prose all the while looking inward and asking: who am I, where do I come from, and how shall I live. You’ll spin gold from ghosts, cry your eyes + asses off, make new friends and, most importantly, create the beginning of a new body of work that’ll blow your own mind wide open.
